Vol. 4 – Test update: new driveline package in the Actros

Event

Comfort at its best.

Actros drivers said they wanted an update to the drivetrain, and the Mercedes‑Benz truck developers have risen to the challenge! Key topics: Fuel consumption and driving dynamics – part 4 of the new series on RoadStars.

As part of the new  Powertrain Pack, engineers have further optimised the accelerator pedal and software. How good that feels in practice was tested by nine professional drivers at two events in Wörth and Grünstadt on an Actros 1848 with an optimized drive train for an 1845, an Actros L 1845 as the new flagship, and an Actros 1845 of the current series status.

Soft start.

Six drivers are looking forward to the event at the Maxi Autohof Kirchheim near Grünstadt. Three of them are from Böpple Automotive GmbH in Esslingen, while three are representing Lettl Transporte GmbH in Wasserburg. They are about to embark on a 50-kilometre tour of the A6 – what will they make of the Actros' accelerator and software optimisation?

When updating the driveline, development engineers Max Lotz and Paul Kern from Daimler Truck AG have made sure that the engine reacts more spontaneously by providing better feedback from the accelerator. “We have now made driving off and manouevering very smooth”, says Max Lotz.

This makes crossing and accelerating - at roundabouts, for example - much easier. The new gearshift strategy also provides greater comfort for those sitting inside the truck, as the driver’s cab remains largely still. Manoeuvring is more convenient too.

Tried and tested by pros.

Markus Reiter from Böpple Automotive gets a feel for the new Actros on the A6 near Grünstadt. This is already his second test drive. "My impression of the new driveline is positive all round. The lads have done a great job." Martin Lettl from Lettl Transporte can only agree. "The Actros is a great vehicle, especially with the Powertrain package. It really is a great achievement."

Let's change the scene. Blue skies and sunshine in Wörth. Here, three drivers from Schröder-Kießling Spedition (SKS GmbH) in Mogendorf sit behind the steering wheels of three Actros trucks. Their journey: the B9 and the L549 around the Development and Testing Centre (EVZ).

So what's the verdict? “It accelerates really smoothly”, says Markus Trojak from Schröder-Kießling Spedition. His summary of the intensive development work is short and sweet: "It's exactly what we always wanted. I drove the truck uphill and downhill and was absolutely thrilled. It’s great to see what’s possible." Work group leader Heiko Wader says: "Our cross-departmental work group really lives out consumer centricity, because we have the drivers and purchasing decision-makers actually sitting in the cockpit."
