Intelligent Driving Experience eActros: the future is today

Intelligent Driving Experience eActros

Charged & Ready.

The eActros is no distant vision of the future. This is because the all-electric truck from Mercedes‑Benz Trucks is now already rolling off the production line. At the Intelligent Driving Experience eActros in Wörth, seven RoadStars learned just what the truck can deliver.

Tobias Wöllmer knows his way around the scene. He knows exactly what a good truck is. This Franconian native has been driving an Actros Edition 2 for a year now – a truck which is also the best he can imagine. Tobias was able to choose it all by himself. The 41-year-old is now well set up. "Despite this, I’m really excited about seeing what awaits us here." Tobias has just arrived at the area in the east of Karlsruhe, where the Intelligent Driving Experience eActros evening program is taking place. Together with six other participants from the RoadStars community, he is enjoying a few hours here where there is time for informed discussions among colleagues and where he can take in an awesome presentation of the eActros. The other RoadStars: Mike Freiberg, Uwe Haller, Manfred Wandl, Mariusz Uminski, Michael Tanzer and Josef Rumpfinger.

The electric fleet is ready.

We headed off in the morning to the Branch Information Centre (BIC) at the Wörth plant. Mercedes‑Benz has made the site an impressive information area on the topic of e-mobility for a few weeks. At the atrium, the participants pass through ten eActros 300s, five of which are fitted with a swap body, three with a box body, one with a roll-off skip loader, and one with a refrigerated box. A close look at an eActros 400 can be taken in the hall.

Strong programme, lots of information.

An international audience of experts learn everything they need to know to be successful with the eActros. Absolute top professionals in the industry present the Mercedes‑Benz Trucks programme to the participants over four workshops. "What we are offered here is truly awesome. Of course, I’m really excited about finally being able to drive the truck myself," says Tobias.

"Once you press the pedal and you notice that there is an enormous amount of power right from the start."

– Tobias Wöllmer, participant in the Intelligent Driving Experience eActros

After lunch, the seven RoadStars sit at the helm of the eActros themselves. They go on a 30-minute test drive, where they try out some really good features first hand, such as the single-pedal driving* and the recuperation. Mike is pushed back into the driver’s seat as he accelerates while pressing his right foot on the accelerator pedal. The full torque available in the eActros at every engine speed puts a smile on the driver’s face. After the test drive, Mike looks completely surprised while standing in front of the eActros: "I can't believe what I’ve just experienced here. As if the truck had no limits at all," said the 27-year-old, who drives long-haul transport for a freight forwarder from the Netherlands.

Tobias has also just got out of the truck and is now standing beside the cab shaking his head in disbelief. Did the truck meet expectations? "More than met, it has surpassed them entirely. One presses on the pedal and notices that there is a huge amount of power right from the start." And what about the driving experience? "You think you’re hovering over the road. I mean it: I’m really amazed."

Watch the video next week to hear what the drivers had to say after their tours with the eActros.

* "One-pedal driving" is a comfort function that enables acceleration and reduction of the speed depending on the position of the accelerator. Safe operation of the vehicle cannot be guaranteed by driving with one pedal alone. In order to fulfil the driver's personal responsibility under road traffic law, the driver must use other available functions depending on the situation, in particular the service brake.
