Vol. 1 – Test update: new driveline package in the Actros

Event

New power.

Mercedes‑Benz Trucks developers have implemented feedback by Actros drivers and updated the driveline. Key topics: Fuel consumption and driving dynamics – part 1 of the new series on RoadStars.

More dynamic at intersections, roundabouts and on inclines? And at the end of the day, it even saves fuel? Sure it does! With immediate effect, the new Powertrain Pack – the optimised driveline – ensures that the Actros reacts more spontaneously to route changes. Nine drivers will head onto the track at two events in Wörth and Grünstadt to put the new truck through its paces.

Successful teamwork.

A sunny morning here at the Development and Testing Centre (EVZ) in Wörth. Heiko Wader (driveline concepts and system design) is eagerly awaiting the return of three test drivers. His focus group has put a lot of work and expertise into the new driveline. Jens Kleffel is one of Heiko's colleagues. “Our task was to optimise turbocharging and combustion,” says the Mercedes‑Benz Trucks development engineer for engine thermodynamics. The team can be proud of the result – the new driveline with the third-generation OM 471 consumes up to four percent less than its predecessor.

For this purpose, the development team focussed on pistons, injection nozzles and cylinder heads, so that the peak ignition pressure is now more efficient at up to 250 bar. There are two new turbochargers – one economical model for long-haul transport, the other variant powerful for heavy-duty tasks – as well as optimised oil management, as part of which a demand-driven valve and a new, low-viscosity engine oil reduce friction losses. All of this means lower consumption – and lower CO2 emissions at the same time.

Tested by professionals.

Three drivers from Schröder-Kießling Spedition (SKS GmbH) based in Mogendorf put the optimised engine to the test in Wörth. Two Actros 1845s with the previous driveline were available for comparison. The route: From the R&D centre one vehicle headed for the B9 dual carriageway, the other for the L549 country road, with the routes being eight and 20 kilometres long respectively.

One of the test drivers is SKS Managing Director Kevin Kießling. At a roundabout he speculates about the results, saying: “I won't have to use either the throttle or brake here.” That’s right – his Actros smoothly takes the turn with him just steering. His enthusiastic comment: “Absolutely fantastic!” And also fuel-saving.

Fleet manager Alfred Böpple from Böpple Automotive GmbH in Esslingen also signals thumbs up while testing the new driveline on the A6 motorway near Grünstadt. "The new retarder is good. The transmission is good,” he concludes. “Gearshifting is outstanding and I also like the engine performance.”

Part two will focus on gearshifting and transmissions in more detail: To be continued.
