Vol. 3 – Test update: new powertrain pack in the Actros

Events

Power on demand.

The feedback from Actros drivers is in, and Mercedes‑Benz developers have risen to the challenge with an update to the powertrain. Key topics: Fuel consumption and driving dynamics – part 3 of the series on RoadStars.

The new  Powertrain Pack keeps the Actros strong on the road and guarantees a remarkable driving performance. And it's all down to the Top Torque, the torque boost that has been expanded on the new powertrain. At two driving events in Wörth and Grünstadt, nine drivers put the update to the test. The vehicles that will be put through their paces are the Actros 1848 with optimised powertrain compared with an 1845, the new flagship Actros L 1845 and the Actros 1845 from the current series.

Power at the push of a button.

The sun beams down on the Development and Testing Centre (EVZ) in Wörth. Three test drivers from Schröder‑Kießling Spedition (SKS GmbH) from Mogendorf will be out on the road this morning. Three drivers from Böpple Automotive GmbH from Esslingen and three drivers from Lettl Transporte GmbH from Wasserburg set out from Maxi Autohof Kirchheim near Grünstadt. The drivers' opinions are essential. What will they make of the new torque boost – the extended Top Torque – in the new powertrain?

Along with his team, Peter Loch, calculation engineer for fuel consumption and driving performance, has taken the engine to a new level. "We are talking about extended Top Torque because we already have higher torque from seventh gear and so lose less speed on hills, for example", he says. "Downshifting is rarely necessary. The advantages of the extended Top Torque are also revealed in the improved longitudinal dynamics when accelerating, for example when driving onto the motorway or overtaking."

Top Torque provides an additional 200 Nm of torque in the A‑Standard and A‑Power driving programmes. With continuous maximum torque in gears seven to twelve. At the push of a button. This means that the driver can easily generate a higher driving performance in demanding situations.

Tried and tested by the pros.

Daniel Radtke from Böpple Automotive sits behind the steering wheel in the new Actros on the A6 near Grünstadt. This is what he has to say: "It’s really snappy." And there's more: "You really notice the 200 newton metres."

On the same route. Stephan Lettl Jr. from Lettl Transporte is absolutely beaming. "It really is great at getting into gear!" he enthuses. "You really notice how efficient it is on hills."

"You tap the accelerator pedal and you're there", says Markus Trojak from Schröder-Kießling Spedition. "My truck isn't like that!"

Speaking of tapping: The fourth and final part of the series will be all about the accelerator pedal and software optimisation in the new powertrain: To be continued.
