An Arocs Special.

A special truck for special tasks – the heavy haulage company Viktor Baumann acquires a specially converted Arocs up to 250 tonnes. The maximum trailer load of the 8x6 is 1,000 tonnes.


Mercedes‑Benz Trucks has transferred a specially converted Arocs for heavy-duty transport to Viktor Baumann. The maximum trailer load of the new Arocs up to 250 tonnes 4463 AS 8×6 is 1,000 tonnes. For haulage of this magnitude, the truck will drive in combination with several coupled trucks. This enables the gross combination weight to be significantly higher than 1,000 tonnes. In the future, Viktor Baumann GmbH will use the Arocs for transporting transformers, heat exchangers, and more.

In extreme heavy‑duty operations, two, three or more trucks coupled together pull a multi‑axle platform, such as a flatbed trailer or a vessel bed trailer, while another truck pushes from behind. With a towing capacity of up to 1,000 tonnes on the trailer coupling, the Baumann fleet's new Arocs up to 250 tonnes will be the last towing vehicle and therefore act as a link to the trailer.

The 4463 AS 8×6 is the only all-wheel-drive truck in the Arocs series with a wide cab. Advantage: The retrofitted BigSpace cab enables two-man operation during longer assignments.

The conversion steps in detail.

The Arocs was fitted with a leading axle with moving-off aid by means of relief control at Mercedes‑Benz Trucks' biggest conversion plant in Molsheim, France. In addition, the fifth-wheel coupling, heavy‑duty sliding device and the heavy‑duty trailer couplings at the front, including the heavy‑duty coupling Rockinger type 56e, and at the rear, were all retrofitted with a 1000‑tonne trailer coupling Rockinger type RO58 that can be fitted if required.


The heavy‑duty transport frame behind the cab, an additional cooling system, a 900‑litre fuel tank and the hydraulic system for the semitrailer steering were also fitted. A team from the conversion company Paul Nutzfahrzeuge replaced the StreamSpace cab with the larger BigSpace cab with a width of 2.5 metres.

The new cab has a small engine tunnel of around 100 millimetres in order to not exceed the permissible overall height of four metres. For this purpose, the front of the vehicle has also been lowered. As a result of the cab replacement, all interior equipment such as the dashboard, bed and drawers had to be adapted. An additional tower with stowage boxes was also installed behind the cab and the ballast platform was mounted.
