Transporting locally: trucks from Mercedes‑Benz make the Mascio fleet even more efficient

Business & logistics

Well positioned.

The use of modern technology is vital on large construction sites – Stefano Mascio is convinced of this and therefore puts his faith in the Actros. There is even an Edition 1 in the fleet.

New Actros: The Edition 1 is the star in the Mascio fleet.

From the Bologna–Florence high-speed railway link to the new Polcevera ciaduct in Genoa for the A 10 motorway, the Mascio Group – based in Mornico al Serio in the province of Bergamo – has been involved in most of the major large-scale projects carried out in Italy over the past 20 years. In 1972, Domenico Mascio built up the company in Molise, specialising in the dismantling and transport of construction materials.

The turning point came in 1998, when Mascio’s son Stefano decided to focus on large‑scale projects, beginning with earthworks for the Tuscan‑Emilian high-speed railway link. In the following years, the company’s scope was continuously broadened as the siblings Emilio, Daniele, Paola and Marco joined the business.

Projects such as motorways and runways were added and the original company turned into the corporate group that constitutes four separate firms: Moviter, Traspoter and Beton Trasporti for transport and Mascio Service for vehicle support. “Today, 80 per cent of our turnover comes from large‑scale projects, which primarily brings us to Liguria, Piedmont and Lombardy,” explains Stefano Mascio, adding that the group is currently involved in the most important construction sites in the north-west of Italy, including building the A 10 Polcevera viaduct, the third railway pass and Line 4 of the Milan Metro.

“So that we could manage the construction sites in Liguria and Piedmont better, we recently opened new premises in Novi Ligure to cater to about 60 vehicles.”

The Mascio Group uses its own fleet for its transports, and has 120 tractor units as well as 30 cement mixers and pumps at its disposal. “Using modern and high-tech vehicles is vital if you want to get contracts for large-scale projects,” says Stefano Mascio. “Above all, customers expect hauliers to provide a reliable service and ensure that the drivers and people working on construction sites are safe.”

New generation of trucks enhances the fleet.

The latest vehicle purchases has seen the Actros joining the Mascio Group – 15 tractor units, including an Actros Edition 1. And sitting in the driving seat of this exclusive model is Daniele Mascio, who is responsible for the fleet and the drivers in the company. “To further emphasise the Edition 1’s exclusive colour scheme, we have also repeated it on the trailer. We use this articulated truck for various jobs, such as delivering aggregates and asphalt for roads and public open spaces,” explains Daniele Mascio, who drives the Edition 1 himself.

“We take great care that the drivers and personnel on the constructions sites are safe. In this respect, the MirrorCam is a considerable step forwards. On the road, for example, it helps the driver to estimate distances. And when manoeuvring, changing to the applicable mode ensures better visibility.”

Mascio has installed a wireless reversing camera on all trailers and cement mixers, which provide an almost complete view of what is happening around the truck in combination with the MirrorCam. Another accessory that the company has added to all its vehicles is a fire extinguisher. “This isn’t mandatory for our trucks, but our drivers have already put the fire extinguishers to use in some situations where they encountered other vehicles on the road that were in flames.”

As far as the future of the company is concerned, Stefano Mascio is optimistic: “We expect sales to grow by 30 per cent this year and by another 20 per cent in 2021,” says the entrepreneur.
