Mileage millionaire of the month: Carel Talsma

September 2018

Mileage millionaire Carel Talsma.

Every journey is a challenge.

How did you come to be a truck driver?

It all started when I was a student, I suppose. I was earning some money on the side driving a Mercedes-Benz 913. Then I spent 20 years in the advertising industry and five in the finance sector, and I never saw the inside of a truck during all that time. Later on, just as I was about to suffer from burn-out for the second time, I decided on a change of course. I had fond memories of my days as a truck driver and that’s what led me to getting back behind the wheel. Now I’ve been working Gijsen Poedercoating since 2004.

What do you transport and where does it predominantly take you?

The company’s main focus is on powder coating, so I usually carry metal components. Everything from lamp shades to agricultural implements and mounts for industrial machinery. Basically all shapes and sizes.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

In no particular order: the freedom I have and the contact with customers.

Where do you most like driving?

I drive in the Netherlands, all over the country. I enjoy driving everywhere, but in the cities the traffic can be really tedious.

Which 100 kilometres of your million kilometres were the most demanding?

The ones I drove with extendible trailers. 25 metres long and 2.75 metres wide. But really I see every journey as a challenge, especially as at first glance there always seems to be more load waiting than will fit on my truck! Fitting everything in is sometimes like a high-level game of Tetris.

What technical conveniences would you no longer be able to give up as a professional driver?

There are several that I really appreciate. Route planning with TMC for trucks, for example, which has helped me avoid getting stuck in a traffic jam on several occasions. It’s brilliant.

What do look forward to after a long day at work?

Kite surfing! Sometimes I drive straight to the water after work just to surf for an hour. I’ve been doing it for 15 years, it’s a really addictive sport.

Final question: What's your dream truck?

You’ll probably find this surprising, but it’s a... motorhome! With enough room to go travelling around Europe with my wife. Also, there'd have to be room for a car as well, for shopping trips and exploring the area, and obviously finding the best places for kite surfing.
