Secret Places

Cappadocia, Turkey.

The place:

Cappadocia lies around 300 kilometres south-east of the Turkish capital, Ankara. The landscape in the heart of central Anatolia is marked by volcanic eruptions and erosion. The typical, tower-like tuff stone formations were shaped over millions of years. These so-called fairy chimneys, most of them capped with a protective layer of basalt, can rise to over 30 metres in height. The excellent thermals in the region make Cappadocia a Mecca for balloonists.

Insider's tip:

"Whoever sees a photo from Cappadocia first thinks it must be a montage. But it's all real! These bizarre rock towers and incredible mountain chains give the appearance of a fairytale landscape. And when you add to that dozens of brightly coloured hot-air balloons drifting into the sky, well, it's a sight you just have to see. I'm determined to go back there and float through the sky in a balloon myself."
