Secret Places

Ávila, Spain.

The place:

Ávila has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The most famous and important monument in the Spanish town is the around 2500-metre-long, fully preserved town wall, which dates from the 11th to 14th centuries. With its 88 towers and nine gates, the impressive structure encircles the entire historic town centre. In the warring times of the Middle Ages, even the Gothic cathedral was conceived as a fortress by the imaginative architects and was simply made part of the existing wall. Perched at 1131 metres above sea level, Ávila is today the highest provincial capital in Spain.

Insider's tip:

"It's just incredible how well preserved the old masonry is. Even so, it always keeps a lot of workmen busy, as such a historic old town is also very good for business. But whatever the reason for your visit, the only things missing are knights, horses, carts and market traders. Everything would then still look the same as back in the Middle Ages."
