4-XTREMES – PART 78: To the furthest corners of Chile

SERIES: 4-XTREMES – THE WORLD TOUR

To the furthest corners of Chile.

Mike and Andrea explore a very remote but beautiful part of southern Chile with their Axor.

Hey RoadStars, we have exciting news: we're on the final leg of the Carretera Austral! We start at the Cuevas de Mármol, the marble caves near the village of Puerto Rio Tranquilo. We visit the breathtaking caves on a boat tour – and to say that this region is one of the wettest in the world, the weather's unusually good!

A truck in need of rescue.

We head to our favourite valley in the region, Valle Exploradores, to stay the night. We camp on the banks of a crystal-clear river and the view is just perfect: glaciers and rugged mountains surround us. The next day, we continue on our journey. Suddenly, we see a truck that has slid off the road at an exit. When we stop, it turns out that the driver and front passenger have been stuck there for a day. Of course, we help them and pull the truck back onto the road.

The end of the Carretera Austral.

Next, we drive to the small village of Caleta Tortel, which we explore on foot, as it is built in a bay and can only be reached via wooden bridges. For me (Mike) as a carpenter, there is a lot to admire! From here, we continue to the village of Villa O'Higgins, at the end of the Carretera Austral. It's a picturesque drive, with O'Higgins Lake awaiting us at the end. We spend a whole week here, exploring the surrounding area.

An unusual crossing.

We travel even deeper into the south of Chile, to Tierra del Fuego, on board a ferry – a welcome change from the many kilometres on the gravel road.

The journey takes 41 hours as we pass through the Chilean fjords to Puerto Natales. We even got fresh ice while on the journey – as we were travelling along, the crew let down the loading ramp and caught a small iceberg! The perfect end to our adventure.
