4-Xtremes – Part 4: On the road in the Teijo National Park – highly recommended

Series: 4-Xtremes – The World Tour

Wilderness in miniature form.

The Kammermanns show you Finland’s natural beauty – while their Axor stays put for a change.

Hiking, climbing, boating: the Teijo National Park offers well-signposted but challenging hiking tours.

For many people Finland evokes above all images of untouched nature. And you don’t have to go to remote areas to experience why this is. It’s enough to take a trip to the Teijo National Park 150 kilometres west of Helsinki.

This nature reserve shows the many sides of Finland over just a few square kilometres: lakes sparkling in the sun, forests, marshes, streams and a bay. Reason enough to leave the Axor and go hiking.

A challenging nine kilometres.

We chose only a nine-kilometre circular hike out of consideration for our dog, Aimée, who is not as fit as she used to be. However the tour was quite a challenge, taking us through marshy ground and across narrow wooden planks. At one point we had to cross a stretch of water: on a raft that you pulled using a rope.

After the hike we heard the coolest comment ever about our Axor. A German family parked next to us and the child asked “Dad, is that a truck?” And Dad answered “No, that’s Dad’s dream.”

Elk tracks in the moss.

The infrastructure in Finland’s national parks is great: tracks are well-signposted, fire pits have wood, an axe and a saw – sometimes there are even coffee pots and pans, ground water pumps and composting toilets. That means that particularly on weekends it can be busy.

That’s why we spent our three days in Teijo somewhat off the beaten track near an unused logger road.

While we were collecting firewood, we discovered elk tracks in the moss and immediately set up our wildlife cameras. Unfortunately, we didn’t “catch” any animals. To do that we will probably have to travel into more remote areas. Keep your fingers crossed that we’re successful in Lapland at the latest!

4-Xtremes – The World Tour.

An unparalleled journey.

Andrea and Mike Kammermann have been on tour in their Axor for three years. "4-Xtremes – The World Tour" is the motto of the journey that the two Swiss nationals embarked on in mid-2020 and which they share with the RoadStars community. Keep up to date and don't miss out on any of the stunning destinations visited by the adventurous pair.
