Evolution of an Icon

25 years of the Actros.

Driven by many. Loved by more. The truck that marked the dawn of a new era in design, efficiency, safety and comfort turned 25 years-old this year. Radical, courageous and defined by innovation, the Actros sets standards to which others aspire to achieve – and it’s yet to reach the climax of its journey…

Exposed to the world.

At the IAA show in Hanover on 21 September 1996, from beneath a barely-there silk sheet, the sleek Actros was exposed to the world – a commercial vehicle unlike any other that was awarded ‘International Truck of the Year’ just a year after the first model rolled off the production line. Each model variation a resounding success, the Actros would go on to win the industry’s most coveted accolade on a further four occasions in recognition of its impressive technological innovations - most recently in 2020.

The original Actros employed a network of Telligent on-board systems to monitor and control the all-new V6 and V8 engines, transmission and suspension, as well as the world’s first standard-fit braking system with discs all round. With a firm grip on innovation and a thirst for never-ending development, these ground-breaking features by Mercedes-Benz Trucks proved to be a great success, translating into dramatically improved fuel-efficiency, increased safety – stopping distances were slashed by 25%! – and an unprecedented advance in service intervals, which were now up to between 100,000 and 120,000 km.

Leaving James Dean quaking.

For a truck so rebellious that James Dean is left quaking in his boots, the flexing of conventional boundaries for over 25 years has thrust the Actros into a category of its own, leaving competitors jostling to develop their own versions of the technology first deployed in the Actros.

In 2019, the fifth generation Actros - well-endowed with no fewer than 60 innovations - took the industry’s breath away once again. In the process of removing conventional mirrors to be replaced by all-new MirrorCam – one of Mercedes-Benz’s more daring manoeuvres - drivers were stripped from their comfort-zones and faced with a raw and exciting concept that would greatly improve visibility and contribute significantly to fuel economy. Active Drive Assist made partially automated driving – braking, accelerating, and steering – a reality and the state-of-the-art Multimedia Cockpit aroused the excitement of generations of drivers. Safety assistance system, Active Brake Assist 5, fuel-saving Predictive Powertrain Control, and Uptime were all developed to help reach Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ RoadEfficiency goals of greater safety, low total costs and maximised use.

“We are immensely proud to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Actros,” commented Katie Purcell, Head of Marketing for Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK. “Few, if any, trucks generate such loyalty and passion among customers, plenty of whom have been running Actros through all five model generations. We love hearing and sharing their positive stories about our flagship product.”
