For National Lorry Week, we find out why our RoadStars #LoveTheLorry

DRIVERS

Our RoadStars share why they #LoveTheLorry.

This year, the RHA’s National Lorry Week takes place from 15-21 September. The focus is on promoting the haulage industry to schools, communities and colleges to attract the next generation of drivers into the industry.

We asked some of our RoadStars at a recent Truckfest event to tell us what they love about their job. Keep an eye out for the full interviews, which will be published over the coming weeks.

“I got interested in trucks because of my dad. My dad’s a truck driver so ever since growing up I’ve always been around trucks.”

“But I can remember nearly washing off the red Coca Cola sign on the side of the truck when I was a kid with a jet wash. I nearly got in trouble for that one!”

“I love that you do a lot of travelling. You go to some weird and wonderful places. You see some weird and wonderful people.”

Mark Coles, Restore Datashread

“I passed my test and the following day the boss said “here’s your new truck” and gave me a Mercedes. I was loving it. I was excited. I was chuffed to bits.”

“Events are great fun. All my friends are drivers so it’s a get-together and we all meet up. We have a bit of enjoyment and you show off what you’ve got and what you drive.”

Mikey Davies, Ross Garrett Transport

“I love just being out on the open road and meeting people. I can meet the general public, fellow drivers and just have a chat. We acknowledge one another. We’ve seen one another parked up in a truck stop and you sit and have a natter.”

“You see someone regularly and then you don’t see them for a while. You can just stop and have a chat. That’s nice.”

Syd Sutton, Howard Tenens

“I used to go down [to the yard] every Saturday and Sunday and mess about and that’s how I’ve come into it – the same as my boy now.”

“I love driving Mercedes-Benz trucks. I like the comfort.”

Mike Greene, M and M Greene

An industry to be proud of.

At Mercedes-Benz Trucks, we can’t imagine a world without trucks and we appreciate the vital role drivers play in our everyday lives – after all, the sector is the UK’s fifth largest employer and the haulage industry is responsible for moving 98% of the UK economy (including consumer products, machinery and food and agricultural products). That’s a huge achievement!

We’ve created a video to show just how important the role that drivers play is. Why not share it on social media to spread the word?
