Secret Places

Auray, France.

The place:

Auray is an unbelievably charming township in the south-west of Brittany – houses with exposed beams, the old stone bridge across the Rivière d’Auray, countless cafés and small restaurants along the old harbour. The waters around the Gulf of Morbihan are well-known for their oysters. Boats head out to the oyster beds at all times of the day. After their return the valuable freight, chilled but never frozen, is sent on its way to the French capital five hour's drive away. Each day the fresh oysters find their way to the hotels and award-winning restaurants of Paris to delight the taste-buds of gourmets.

Insider's tip:

"The trip to Auray is always a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Paris city traffic. Usually I have a few minutes spare to breathe in the tangy sea air and watch the fishing boats coming and going. For me France has two different faces: Paris with everything that makes for a bustling major city. And picturesque spots such as Auray."
