The right power.

The Actros for loads of up to 250 tonnes at the Graß haulage company is used for particularly heavy loads. The truck is tailored precisely to meet the requirements of the company – the transport company’s specialists tested the 4163 prior to its purchase at the Application Information Centre (BIC).

More relaxed work. The combination of the turbo retarder clutch and the 16-speed PowerShift 3 automated transmission makes work much easier for driver Adrian Kessell.

Adrian Kessell has driven a whole range of trucks. “Including many trucks with a bit more horsepower,” says the driver from the Graß haulage company in Petershagen near Minden. Sitting in the cab, Kessell points to his photos from previous tours taken with a digital camera: “On that transport job, the load alone weighed 100 tonnes.”

Anyone who listens to him talking realises straight away that heavy-duty haulage is his thing. He likes to have colleagues film him and his tractor/trailer combination when driving through towns with difficult spots, on inclines or on narrow roads. And this is especially the case since he started driving his new truck. With a gross combination weight of up to 250 tonnes, his Actros 4163 is one of the most powerful trucks in Europe. “It's just perfect,” is how Kessell describes his star.

The turbo retarder clutch in particular is an absolute highlight for the Englishman who has now been driving for the heavy-duty haulage company from East Westphalia for 18 years: it makes wear-free pulling-away, manoeuvring and braking possible. Without overheating it ensures, when used together with the 16-speed PowerShift 3 automated transmission, that the 460 kW of the OM 473 engine are available as soon as they are required. This can sometimes mean the end for conventional clutches.

As a result it is not only the drivers who benefit – sitting with fewer worries behind the wheel, able to concentrate solely on work – but also the haulage company for which clutch damage can mean considerable costs for spare parts, labour and loss of turnover.

Hands-on trucks.

The heavy-duty professionals from the Graß haulage company have strengthened their fleet to include an Actros for loads up to 250 tonnes. Managing Director Ulf Graß and his team tested the vehicle thoroughly prior to purchasing it. In the Application Information Centre (BIC) in Wörth they were impressed by the truck’s qualities. Heavy-duty tractor units tailored to any type of operation are kept ready for testing at the Centre. There is also a testing ground where customers can see functions like the fluid coupling for themselves. More than 180 complete trucks are available at any time at the Centre.
