Through the north in a refrigerated road train: Uwe Harms and his NG 2232

Classic vehicle

From tipper to chiller.

Uwe Harms built himself a period-correct refrigeration truck out of an Italian NG with a V 10 engine and a tipper body.

New generation. The spoilers next to the radiator grille are an essential part of every NG according to Uwe Harms. They remind him of the vehicle fleet his great uncle owned. And they help keep the side windows clean by reducing the dynamic air pressure at the front and the amount of air turbulence caused.

The model series.

When the new-generation vehicles were launched, the motoring world looked up in admiration. A contemporary test drive report from 1973 noted: “What the Mercedes technicians have come up with in creating the new generation is worthy of recognition. This applies equally to the overall concept and the way it is integrated in a modular system […] and to the truck’s many details that are as important to the driver as his daily bread.”

The vehicle.

The best opportunities show up when you’re not looking for them. This rule of thumb for the hunter-gatherers of the automobile world proved true in the case of Uwe Harms and his NG 2232. When he was offered the rear tipper in 1976 his initial reaction was to say no. But then he began to mull it over. “It was an Italian export model and in pretty good condition.” Then he was promised delivery direct to his door, and the 58-year-old was finally won over.
