Düsseldorf's gliders and their trusty LP 813

Classic vehicles

Final season for the first vehicle from Wörth.

For more than three decades, a Mercedes‑Benz LP 813 has been bringing gliders into the skies above Düsseldorf. But the truck is soon to enter its well-earned retirement.

The model series.

At the 1965 motor show in Brussels, the world was shown a premiere as Mercedes‑Benz presented the LP model series, which was the first light‑duty 6.5‑tonne vehicle in this segment and thus able to be driven by anyone who held a regular passenger car licence at the time. And in addition to that, the LP 608 was also the first truck ever to leave the brand‑new production line in Wörth. In reference to this, Germans gave it the nickname of "Wörther I" which it still bears to this day. The nippy cab‑over‑engine truck took the market by storm and continued to be manufactured until the 1980s. Over the years, much more powerful variants were added to the line‑up, including the 130 hp OM 352, as well as 7.5, 10 and even 11-tonne gross vehicle weight variants.
