4-Xtremes – Part 15: a journey back in time for Andrea and Mike in Bulgaria

Series: 4-Xtremes – The World Tour

Blankets of snow and clouds.

Unexpected things often turn up: at the beginning of the year, the Kammermanns had the opportunity to visit a very special monument; including winter’s snowy beauty.

Torches of concrete: this still image is part of the Buzludzha monument on the mountain of Hadzhi Dimitar in the centre of Bulgaria.

We still want to continue our “World Tour” with a journey through Turkey – and we are still waiting for the go-ahead from the authorities there. Perhaps you can remember that Mike's entry ban, imposed in 2019, was recently extended when we wanted to cross the border from Bulgaria into Turkey.

A detour into the centre of Bulgaria.

However, we didn’t get bored. On the contrary: after a few days on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, we decided to use the time we had saved to make a trip into the centre of the country. Our destination was a day’s journey away: the Buzludzha monument at a height of over 1400 metres on the mountain of Hadzhi Dimitar.

The monument consists of a concrete building reminiscent of a UFO. Next to it there is a tower with a five-pointed star pointing high up at the sky. There’s no doubt about it: this is a construction from communist days – from 1981, to be precise. A journey back in time in Bulgaria.

Snow at last! The Axor is undaunted by the thick snow – and Aimée the dog loves playing in it.

Biting wind at the summit.

On our first 4-Xtremes tour two years ago, we came up here to the peak of the Hadzhi Dimitar. The crucial difference: back then it was spring, and this time the mountain was covered by a blanket of snow. The world around was hidden under an even thicker blanket of cloud which only lifted once when the sun suddenly came out. In front of this backdrop, the monument was even more impressive.

We intended to spend the night up there. However, there was a biting wind blowing. Cold and snow are no problem for our Axor, and it has withstood much lower temperatures. But we had not yet filled it with winter diesel and we couldn’t be sure quite how icy the night would become. So we decided to beat a retreat before dusk and we spent the night a few hundred metres lower down, out of the wind, in a forest. All the same, it was a trip we would recommend to anybody visiting Bulgaria.
