4-Xtremes – Part 49: Peak-hopping instead of coast on Gran Canaria

Series: 4-Xtremes – The World Tour

In the clouds.

For the finale of their trip to the Canaries the Kammermanns take the Axor to another high level: in Gran Canaria’s fascinating mountain landscape.

Best view: Close to the Pico de las Nieves, the Kammermanns discovered a camping site that is unparalleled.

If you want to take it easy on Gran Canaria, you can just drive around the almost circular island – or stay on the beach. Neither of these was an option for us! After arriving in the capital city of Las Palmas, we turn onto one of the routes leading to the centre of the island – into its fascinating world of peaks and canyons.

Our goal was the 1,949 metre high Pico de las Nieves. The winding roads into the mountains demand a lot from the Axor. A few cars come towards us: Locals who turn without even braking. The sun is followed by rain, and then we feel like we’re driving through dense clouds for an eternity, until suddenly we’re back in the sun.

Finally green again!

The trip was worthwhile for the view of the surrounding peaks alone. Everything is blossoming and the smell of flowers and pine trees is everywhere. Recently on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, golf courses were pretty much the only green areas. And because these were taboo for Aimée, our dog is now particularly pleased about the vegetation.

Three kilometres from the “Pico” and at an altitude of around 1,800 metres, we camp on a cliff – and decide to stay for a few days. The heating was on from time to time, as at night temperatures drop to five degrees. The bike tour to the summit can be quickly summarised: The climb was steep, and at the top the clouds were so dense that we could only see the railing from the viewpoint. However, it was worth a try.

A mountain with an 80-metre summit.

What could be better than visiting one of Gran Canaria’s landmarks? Especially as it's just a few kilometres away. The Roque Nublo is a mountain whose summit crowns a striking approx. 80 metres high basalt rock. This attracts many visitors. But we were there very early and went for a short hike. The monolith presented an impressive sight. Plus: From here you could see over to Tenerife with its volcano Teide – one of our first destinations on the Canary Islands. And that brought us full circle.
