On the safe side.

Gebrüder Maier was one of the first freight forwarders to bring the new Mercedes‑Benz premium truck onto the road. With Active Brake Assist 5, a trailer, and Thomas Maier behind the wheel.

An early summer's morning in Eppingen-Elsenz, Baden-Wuerttemberg. The sparkling clean gentian blue Actros L 2551 shines in the sun. Thomas Maier proudly takes his seat behind the wheel of his truck, which is powered by a 375 kW (510 hp) OM 471.

His gaze passes through the spacious cab: "Impressive, isn't it? What's also great is that it’s nice and quiet inside." It's all thanks to the L’s new cab sound insulation.

The Actros L is used by the freight forwarder with a trailer. “For me, an articulated drawbar truck is much easier to drive than a semitrailer – except when reversing; that’s a bit more demanding”, says Thomas. The overall length of the articulated truck is 18.65 metres.

Premium truck.

Thomas drives around 20 times a month for his own freight forwarder, Gebrüder Maier GmbH. Many of his trips are to a major mechanical and plant engineering customer in Eppingen, ten kilometres away. And that's exactly where he's headed today. His first job: to transport a roof truss, a wooden frame with a pressure plate attached.

The company acquired the premium truck in January 2022. On top of the standard safety equipment Control Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Proximity Control Assist, the Actros L of course also has the interactive on-board Multimedia Cockpit.

With the help of a lifting platform and a crane, Thomas was able to load the Actros in no time at all.

“Even safer thanks to Active Brake Assist 5”.

"When we chose the Actros L, its excellent equipment was what really sealed the deal for us, especially the new turning assistant, Active Sideguard Assist“, explains Thomas. He was also impressed by Active Brake Assist 5, which has been fitted as standard in the Actros since January 2020: The system can apply partial or full braking in response to moving pedestrians at a vehicle speed of up to 50 km/h. “This means more safety for all road users”, he says.

In addition to his role as a stand-in, Thomas is also one of the two managing directors of the freight forwarder Gebrüder Maier. Together with his cousin Armin Maier, the 52-year-old took over the family business in 1995 – despite reservations of their families. “Armin and I had both gained a strong foothold in other areas”, explains Thomas. The cousins persevered, growing their fleet, and have been working passionately ever since. “We hardly ever have weekends off”, says Armin Maier. “Our 18 trucks are like 18 babies; there’s always something going on!”

Well invested.

The short tour with the Actros L passes through the hilly Kraichgau region. On the key client's premises, there's a lot going on: cranes are loading trucks from various companies, making loud squeaks as they do so, and staff are loudly calling out instructions to one another. Thomas uses the waiting time to prepare the articulated truck's trailer, which can be loaded from the rear, left, right and top. The loading process only takes a few minutes before Thomas can head back to his own company's premises. He leaves the roof truss in the haulage company’s 1,500‑square‑metre warehouse for its trip the next morning.

In the warehouse, the next task is already waiting for him: a generator that Thomas loads alone into the Actros trailer using the 30-tonne crane sitting on two rails. Armin has a look into the hall where the goods are stacked – from machine components to adhesives and hazardous goods. “We only built the hall in 2012”, he says, “and it's already not big enough again!”

Thomas has now loaded the generator safely. Behind the wheel of the articulated truck, he sets off again – back through the green, hilly landscape of the Kraichgau.
