See better and drive safer: the update for the MirrorCam is here

Vehicle & Technology

It’s in the details.

MirrorCam makes driving more comfortable, safer and more fuel-efficient – and in the new generation currently being fitted more than ever.

You know the situation: anyone manoeuvring backwards from bright sunshine into a dark hall only sees pitch blackness with classic mirrors.  MirrorCam, however, identifies the situation and increases the contrast form the pictures in the displays to match the current lighting conditions – manoeuvring made easy.

Especially with the second generation of MirrorCam, which is now available. The developers have once again put the image parameters to the test and optimised them. A picture that can correctly reproduce even a high range of contrasts is the result. Other areas of improvement are the colour rendering and adjustment of the brightness. All in all, it creates a display that supports the driver better than ever before with its vivid detail.

The design of the camera arms has also changed. They are now shorter on both sides. This instantly makes reversing in a straight line easier for drivers because the perspectives are more similar to those of classic mirrors. Less overall width also means less danger of collision with objects on the roadside. And finally, the camera arm now has a a drip edge beneath it that can stop rainwater from reaching the lens, leading to unwanted optical impairments.

Assessing distances.

Distance lines in the display on the A-pillar help to better assess traffic and to overtake safely.

Additional warning.

The Sideguard Assist also acts as a warning when changing lanes: for example, if there is a truck on the right that could make it dangerous moving into the right lane, a yellow warning triangle appears in the display on the passenger side.

Panning along with bends.

When driving around bends, the picture of the inside of the bend of the display pans along. This way, unlike a conventional mirror system, you have the trailer end in view at all times.

Green: MirrorCam field of vision. Red: Field of vision of a conventional mirror system.

Reversing up a platform.

MirrorCam also helps when reversing up a platform: the main display then switches to a special wide-angle mode. This way, the driver has a better view of the truck’s surroundings.

Sideguard Assist uses the MirrorCam display.

The Sideguard Assist can warn the driver optically and acoustically if there is a danger of collision when making a right turn – for example, with a cyclist. First, a yellow triangle appears in the MirrorCam display, followed by a red triangle.

Save fuel thanks to aerodynamics.

Compared to the large main and wide-angle mirrors, MirrorCam is considerably more aerodynamic. This can lower fuel consumption by up to 1.3 per cent.

Top all-round visibility.

When making a turn and manoeuvring, MirrorCam has an additional advantage: the view out front is always unimpaired – no external mirrors restricts the driver’s field of view.

Keep an eye on the truck from the comfort of your own bed.

MirrorCam can be activated at the push of a button when the engine is switched off. This way, the driver can keep an eye on the surrounding area even at night and when the curtains are closed.
