4-Xtremes – Part 29: Hungary is worth a journey

Series: 4-Xtremes – The World Tour

Take a close look!

Fun driving on sandy tracks, scorched feet in Budapest, romantic horses in the Puszta: the Kammermanns discover Hungary.

A metropolis steeped in history: in Budapest, Andrea and Mike discovered many fascinating sights. Here is the castle district with the Matthias Church.

When you hear about Hungary these days, it’s normally to do with political debates. That is understandable – and it’s also a pity: because what gets forgotten is how amazing and varied Hungary is.

Crossing the country eastwards, we wanted to take a closer look. We only touched the edge of the great tourist attraction Lake Balaton. You know us by now: we tend to prefer the remoter spots.

Very varied destinations: from the historic heart of Budapest to the wide open spaces of the Puszta, there is a lot to discover in Hungary – including for off-road travellers like the Kammermanns.

Nothing better than back roads!

So we set off for Budapest, which is not off the beaten track, but we took the little-used routes. We passed through sleepy little villages – and through forests. There we found something you don’t often find in Europe: real driving fun on a labyrinth of sandy tracks. The Axor mastered them easily – and to top it all we discovered a small clearing where we could stay the night.

But hustle and bustle or not, we paid a visit to Budapest. Anything else would have been foolish, as the capital has so much to offer: the hilly district of Buda with the magnificent castle or the Gellért Spa, and also Pest. There, on the other side of the Danube is the city centre, and the historic parliament buildings are next to the river banks.

We spent two nights on a campsite and public transport quickly took us into the city centre. We went back and forth several times and walked the soles of our shoes hot. Of course we were on the banks of the Danube when the sun went down. You have to photograph the parliament in the best possible light.

Trip through the Puszta.

Our last stop was the Puszta. Or to be more precise: the Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park in the far east of the country. Because only in the national parks can you experience this steppe scenery in its original form – in our case it was in extreme heat. We visited an open-air museum and learned a lot about how people used to live here – many of them as nomadic horse and cow herders.

We did not manage to crack the secret of the Hungarian language, which we found impossible to understand, however much imagination we used. However, we found a wonderful location for our last night before we continued on to Romania: in style next to a horse pasture.

4-Xtremes – The World Tour.

An unparalleled journey.

Andrea and Mike Kammermann have been on tour in their Axor for three years.
